Today, I woke up with a deep sense of despair. It felt like impending doom was near. "But why?" I had asked myself. Why this deep, dark despair? My mom used to tell me that psychic abilities ran in the family. I never took her seriously until today. This strange, ominous feeling was burdensome in my heart. I didn't know what to make of it.
I strolled into the kitchen to quickly make a strong cup of coffee. Maybe I needed a jolt to snap me back into reality. The uncomfortableness remained, so I walked into the living room to collect my thoughts. I sat down on the couch and stared out the window. Gray clouds cascade over the hills as droplets fall from the hovering clouds. Then, my eyes made their way further to the ground. There stood a young woman shrouded in the shadows of the hovering clouds. She was motionless and wet from the rain. I couldn't see the details of her face, but something felt very strange about her.
My eyes were fixated on the young woman. "Why is she just standing there?" I thought to myself. Suddenly, I see her head slowly tilting upwards. The hair slid off her face to reveal dark, hollowed eyes. "What is this? What's happening?" The young woman began to point upward toward me. I quickly jumped up to shut the curtains. My heart was pounding at full speed, trying to comprehend the situation. Maybe she was an unhoused individual with some mental instability.
I walked away from the area and decided I needed a cold shower. The strange, ominous feeling stayed with me as I went to the bathroom. I didn't feel alone. The eerie feeling gave me pause. "Why am I feeling this way?" I stood in front of the shower, lost in my emotions and frightened to move.
Snapping out of that feeling, I jumped into the shower and blasted cold water over myself. The chilliness ran over my body as I attempted to shake off this odd waking nightmare. Finally, a calmness rushed over me. Maybe I wasn't fully awake, I thought to myself.
As I stepped out of the shower, I felt renewed. "Okay, maybe it was all in my head." I finished my morning routine and proceeded to my laptop to begin my work-from-home day. After settling in and checking a few emails, things started to feel normal again. I was beginning to think that the morning strangeness was from my lack of sleep. The day went on without any other strange feelings or disturbances. I returned to the living room window and no longer saw the woman from the morning. Things were feeling much better as the evening approached.
I found myself prepping dinner a bit earlier than usual. The sooner I ate, the quicker I could get to bed and rest. When things seemed to be back to normal, the dreaded feeling of uncertainty crept over me. "Oh no," I thought, "why is this feeling back?" I sat down at the table and tried to finish my dinner. I was suddenly overwhelmed by the feeling that someone was watching me. I told myself to ignore it, continue eating, and think about other things.
I scarfed down the remaining food, decided to clean up, and headed to the couch to stream a show. The uneasiness stayed with me, but I tried to ignore it. I blasted my favorite show to drown out any noises and feelings of uncomfortableness. The air in the room started to feel stuffy. I could feel my chest getting heavy and my breathing rapid from a new sense of fear. Something was behind me. The fear inside told me not to turn around. I listened to it, immediately shut off the T.V., and headed to the window for fresh air.
My breathing was fast, and I had to catch my breath. "Why am I feeling this way?" I opened the window and was immediately hit with the cold, crisp air. "Now, this is what I needed." The fresh night air filled my lungs. I kept inhaling and exhaling, hoping to feel normal again. Then, the sound of someone moaning was coming from down the street. I looked down directly across the way and saw the same woman from the morning. This time, the darkness shrouded her. Then, in a shallow, shaky voice, I could hear the woman say, "Sophea."
I leaned out the window to ensure I heard correctly. Then, the woman suddenly walked out of the darkness, and I could see her clearly in the light. It was as if I was staring at a reflection of myself. "That's not possible. Who is this woman? Why does she look like me?" Then, I could see her attempt to utter something. Her voice was too low to hear anything, so I yelled at her to scream louder. She shook her head slowly, then let out a harrowing scream.
Suddenly I felt a sharp pain coming from my back and chest. I looked down and saw a sharp object sticking out of my chest. I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing. "Is that a knife?" I couldn't believe the sight and horror. I was frozen in time and could not fathom what was happening. I looked down the street at my doppelganger and could see the fear in her eyes. She opened her mouth to let out what looked like a scream, but I couldn't hear any sounds. Her arms stretched out towards me when suddenly, like burning ash, she faded away and dissolved into the wind.
It was at that moment that I understood who she was. The girl outside my window was me.
